What does Ihsan mean?
Ihsan has two connected meanings. The first is doing something well and with excellence. The second is doing good to others, such as kindness to parents, neighbours and those in need.
Both meanings come from the same idea: giving more than the minimum, because you are aware that Allah sees what you do.
The root of Ihsan
Ihsan comes from the root ح س ن (ḥā, sīn, nūn), which means beauty and goodness. You will recognise many words from it:
- حَسَن (ḥasan): good, beautiful; also a common name
- حُسْن (ḥusn): beauty, goodness
- حَسَنَة (ḥasanah): a good deed
- إِحْسَان (iḥsān): excellence, doing good
- مُحْسِن (muḥsin): a person who does good with excellence
The dua many Muslims make every day, “Rabbanā ātinā fid-dunyā ḥasanah” (Our Lord, give us good in this world), uses ḥasanah from this same root.
The definition in the Hadith of Jibril
The angel Jibril came to the Prophet ﷺ in the form of a man and asked him about Islam, Iman and Ihsan. When asked about Ihsan, the Prophet ﷺ said:
أَنْ تَعْبُدَ اللَّهَ كَأَنَّكَ تَرَاهُ، فَإِنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ تَرَاهُ فَإِنَّهُ يَرَاكَ“That you worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you do not see Him, then indeed He sees you.”
This hadith presents three levels of the religion. Islam covers outward actions, Iman covers inner belief, and Ihsan brings both to their best through constant awareness of Allah.
Ihsan in the Quran
The Quran commands Ihsan and tells us that Allah loves those who practise it:
وَأَحْسِنُوا ۛ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُحْسِنِينَ“And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.”
Ihsan is listed alongside justice as something Allah commands:
إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُ بِالْعَدْلِ وَالْإِحْسَانِ“Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct.”
In Surah Ar-Rahman, a short question sums up the reward for it:
هَلْ جَزَاءُ الْإِحْسَانِ إِلَّا الْإِحْسَانُ“Is the reward for good anything but good?”
Ihsan in everything
The Prophet ﷺ taught that Ihsan is not limited to prayer. He said that Allah has prescribed Ihsan in all things, and gave the example of treating an animal gently and sparing it suffering at the time of slaughter (Sahih Muslim 1955).
In practice, Ihsan can mean completing work properly when no one is checking, listening fully when someone speaks to you, or reciting the Quran with care rather than rushing. Each of these is a small way of acting as if Allah is watching, because He is.
