What does Al-Wadud mean?
Al-Wadūd comes from wudd (وُدّ), a warm, open love that shows itself in kindness. Scholars explain that the name carries two meanings: Allah loves those who obey Him, and He is the One whom the believers love most.
Wadūd is an intensive form. It does not just mean “loving” but “abundantly, constantly loving”.
The root of Al-Wadud
The root و د د (wāw, dāl, dāl) gives several related words:
- وُدّ (wudd): love, affection
- مَوَدَّة (mawaddah): affection, used in the Quran for the love between spouses
- وَدُود (wadūd): very loving
- وَدَّ (wadda): to wish for, to love
The Quran describes marriage with this root: Allah placed between spouses mawaddah (affection) and raḥmah (mercy) (Quran 30:21).
Al-Wadud in the Quran
The name appears twice in the Quran, and both times it is paired with a name of forgiveness or mercy:
وَهُوَ الْغَفُورُ الْوَدُودُ“And He is the Forgiving, the Loving.”
وَاسْتَغْفِرُوا رَبَّكُمْ ثُمَّ تُوبُوا إِلَيْهِ ۚ إِنَّ رَبِّي رَحِيمٌ وَدُودٌ“And ask forgiveness of your Lord and then repent to Him. Indeed, my Lord is Merciful and Loving.”
The pairing is meaningful. Allah does not only forgive the one who returns to Him; He loves them. Elsewhere the Quran says that Allah loves those who repent (Quran 2:222).
Allah’s love in the hadith
The Prophet ﷺ described what happens when Allah loves a servant. Allah calls Jibril and tells him that He loves this person, so Jibril loves him. Jibril then calls to the people of heaven that Allah loves this person, so they love him too, and acceptance is then placed for him on earth (Sahih al-Bukhari 3209; Sahih Muslim 2637).
This matches a verse in Surah Maryam: Allah will place affection (wuddan, from the same root) for those who believe and do good deeds (Quran 19:96).
Living by this name
The Quran explains how to gain Allah’s love: “Say: If you love Allah, then follow me, and Allah will love you” (Quran 3:31). Following the Sunnah, repenting, being patient and doing good are all mentioned in the Quran as things Allah loves.
Knowing that Allah is Al-Wadūd also changes how a person makes dua. You are asking One who loves you, not a distant power.
