Hamd vs Shukr: praise and gratitude

“Alḥamdulillāh” is often translated as “thank God”, but ḥamd and shukr are two different words with different meanings. Understanding the difference adds depth to something Muslims say many times every day.

حَمْد · شُكْر
Hamd · Shukr
Praise · Gratitude

What is hamd?

Ḥamd (حَمْد), from the root ح م د, means praise. It is praising someone for their excellent qualities, out of love and respect. The Quran opens with it:

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ

“All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds.”

Quran 1:2

You praise Allah for who He is, His perfect names and attributes, even before considering what He has given you. The names Muḥammad and Aḥmad come from the same root, meaning “praised”.

What is shukr?

Shukr (شُكْر), from the root ش ك ر, means gratitude in response to a favour. It is a reaction to something you have received.

Scholars describe shukr as being expressed in three ways: in the heart by recognising the favour, on the tongue by thanking the Giver, and with the limbs by using the blessing in a way that pleases Him.

The difference

Classical scholars summarise it this way:

  • Reason: ḥamd is wider. You praise Allah both for His qualities and for His favours. Shukr is only in response to favours.
  • Means: shukr is wider. Ḥamd is in the heart and on the tongue. Shukr also includes actions.

So every act of shukr toward Allah contains praise, and much of ḥamd is also thanks, but neither fully replaces the other.

Both in the Quran

The Prophet Dawud’s family are told to act in gratitude, showing that shukr includes deeds:

اعْمَلُوا آلَ دَاوُودَ شُكْرًا

“Work, O family of Dawud, in gratitude.”

Quran 34:13

Ḥamd, meanwhile, is the declaration of the people of Paradise: “And the last of their call will be: Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds” (Quran 10:10).

The weight of Alhamdulillah

The Prophet ﷺ said that “alḥamdulillāh” fills the scale of good deeds (Sahih Muslim 223). He also said that the best supplication is “alḥamdulillāh” (Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 3383).

In daily life

When you say “alḥamdulillāh” after sneezing, after eating or when someone asks how you are, you are praising Allah, not only thanking Him for that moment. When you use a blessing well, such as using your health to help someone, you are showing shukr.
